Railroads have always held some level of inexplicable fascination for me. As regular rail service was established in the western US, the frontier became quickly settled and towns grew out of the prairies. Today’s rail infrastructure is only a shadow of what once was, but there remains a lot of evidence of the past, and also a vast wasteland of communities that were decimated when the railroads left. So this blog strives to share images of railroads long gone, like the Milwaukee Road, Great Northern, Northern Pacific, Chicago and Northwestern, etc., as well as those that remain in operation today.
